Holy Headbands!

I’ve been searching for a flowered headband ever since Rachel McAdams wore one during the beach scene in The Notebook.  I’ve always imagined myself wearing one on the beach, after I flutter into Ryan Gosling’s arms and he tells me “if you’re a bird, I’m a bird,” of course.  Okay so maybe I”m a little bit of a daydreamer.  But seriously, why has it taken so long for these babies to hit the market ?
Either way, they’re finally here!  Not only are they here, but they also come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.  Which also leaves me a  little hesitant about some.
I’ve specifically been eyeing this one from Urban Outfitters.
headband1

It’s cute simple, and the flower sits flat on the headband rather than popping out.  Whether dressing up or dressing down, this flower headband can pull together any look.

Now that Blair Waldorf has kindly blessed America by bringing headbands back in style, and we can finally hide dirty hair behind a pretty headpiece, some brands have taken this trend a bit too far.  Urban Outfitters also makes this headband that I’ve noticed, and almost regurgitated my dinner over.

headband2A simple flower is one thing.  A nest is another.  If you want birds and bugs to land in your hair, try out this headband.  If not, stick with simple designs such as the flower headband above, or check out some of the other stylish headbands I found at Urban Outfitters.  Now all we need is Ryan Gosling…

Fashion Through The Decades

You could take a look at history by studying wars, different economic systems, or political leaders.  But if you’re like me, the best way to look at history is through fashion!  Different fashion styles are extremely representative of different decades, and it is one of the best ways to determine what was going on during that period of time.  I mean, what’s better than remembering neon leggings from the eighties, or poodle skirts from the fifties?  Read on as I take you through the last few decades, starting with the sixties and seventies until today.

Oh, the sixties and seventies.  These swingin’ decades were full of different fashion trends representing all the changes that occurred during these twenty years.  This period was a time of major change and teenage revolt.  Diana Vreeland, editor and chief of Vogue during this time, referred to this revolutionary decade as “the youth quake,” which seems the perfect description.  The youth generation wanted to take over and make changes, and believed in liberalism and freedom.  And this, dear reader, was completely evident in their fashions.

Say hello to America’s most loved and most hated fashion piece: the mini skirt.  Mary Quant invented and designed this controversial jaw dropper and you better believe the women of the sixties took this and ran with it, discoed with it, boogied with it, and raved with it.  The mini skirt was loved by the youth, and hated by the older generation.  It represented the women’s movement that took place during this time, because women no longer wanted to be held back by men, and by cultural standards.  They wanted to show their skin, and they did just that.  It was also a major part of the sexual revolution that occurred during this time because the mini skirt was a major sex symbol.  Young women wanted to be free and show off their sex appeal.

Another major trend of the sixties and seventies was mod styled dresses.  These loud colored and vivid patterned dresses represented the psychedelic movement that was taking place.  This design has made its comeback, but thankfully it left the go-go boots that they were so often paired up with behind.

Check out this video of the mini skirt from the 1960s!

And here’s a video of 1970s fashion so you can get a better idea of what these trends looked like!

This is the decade of larger than life hair, shoulder pads jutting out of suit jackets, and one shouldered sweatshirts.  If you guessed the eighties, you are absolutely correct and most certainly in for a treat!  All of these trends continued on into the nineties as well.  These are the fashion trends stylistas around the U.S would love to forget, and pretend never happened.  Although some of these less embarrassing trends are starting to crawl their way back into our lives, some of them will never see the light of day again, thank goodness!  But it is definitely fun to look back at these outrageous fashion statements and make fun of the people (ahem, my mother, and probably yours, too) who actually wore this stuff!

A huge trend in the eighties and early nineties was suits with shoulder pads.  The larger the shoulder pads, the better, the more stylish, and the more powerful the woman behind the suit.  While I understand that women wore these for the sense of power and equal rights, I will never understand why simply holding a demanding job didn’t do this justice.  And to be honest, I’m sure the women of the eighties will full heartedly agree.  Check out this video of my mother’s favorite outfits from the eighties.  And remember, I only lived two years in the eighties, and therefore could not yet offer some fashion advice that most likely would have consisted of “uh, do NOT wear that outfit…” Here’s a video of some of her favorite eighties suits!

Jewelry was a big part of the eighties and no outfit was complete without it.  And like shoulder pads, the bigger the better, unfortunately.  Necklaces had large ornamentation and earrings were decorated to the maximum.  An item could not possibly have too much going on, meaning the colors were vibrant and the details were immaculate.  Every piece stood out and nothing was plain by any means.  Take a peek at this photo gallery of eighties jewelry I found lying around in my mother’s closet, but do not ask me why she has kept it this long!

The sixties, seventies, and eighties and nineties were all extremely distinct in style and trends.  Then we hit the millennium.  While I could list off certain fashion trends that I have seen in the last 20 years, not one single style defines this generation the way bell bottoms define the sixties and seventies.  Instead, I think the past two decades have been almost a melting pot of all of these decades, with a few small additions that we can call our own.

The best way to determine these new trends is by looking at the youth and what they are wearing.  One major fashion trend this generation is Ugg boots.  These boots are expensive, and you guessed it, ugly.  Yet they are so comfortable, and for some reason seen as such a huge fashion trend.  The youth love these boots, and want them in every color and every style.  It is one of the biggest crazes that the past two decades have seen.

Another big trend of this generation, which could technically be traced back to the eighties, is leggings.  Although now we no longer wear leg warmers on top and instead have changed this trend to fit in more with how we dress today.  Leggings are seen as pants with a simple shirt on top, they are seen as tights under dresses, and they are seen as lounge sweat pants.  They can be dressed up or dressed down.  They are seen everywhere in different colors and patterns and worn by women of all ages, young and old.  They seem to define the past two years, with Lindsey Lohan as their spokesperson.

Check out this video of my younger cousins to see more about what styles are in for the youth today!

After learning about the past decades worth of fashion, take this quiz to find out how much you learned!

And now take this poll and let me know what your favorite fashion trend of the decades is!

Black Friday Sees Some Green

With the economy down in the dumps, everyone thought the traditions of Black Friday might slowly come to an end this year.  Though it was a bit different, it seems the bestial and ambitious shoppers live on.  Turkey barely digested in stomachs, shoppers camped outside shopping malls, filling the parking lots in the wee hours of the morning.  Some stores began opening at 4:30 in the morning, and while I didn’t have the guts to face this vicious crowd, I was able to talk to some who did.

According to Haley Cohen, the Juicy Outlet at Jersey Gardens only allowed a certain number of customers into the store at a time.  Cohen, along with Hannah Altman, complained about the line for Victoria’s Secret that stretched all the way out the door.  Both of these women did pride themselves on the bargains they found though, including a scratch off prize of $300 to Forever 21.

Tiffany Chamberlain talked about the deals at stores she shopped at, including free sweatpants at Express if you bought anything before 12 P.M., and jackets for 50% off at Macy’s.

It’s a good thing turkey makes you tired, because these shoppers needed some serious sleep after Thanksgiving to wake up in time for black Friday.  And no worries, retailers, it seems you did pretty well this year regardless of our financial crisis.  Black Friday shall see another day!

Thanksgiving Fashion Advice

I don’t know about you, but the buttons on my pants always need to come undone by the end of the day on Thanksgiving.  So my advice to you on this joyous holiday based on good food: wear loose clothing!  You may know them as pregnant tops, but after all, you are trying to hide that food baby! You don’t need to look like a frump, just find a stylish loosely fitting top and comfortable pants and dig into that wonderful feast!rowpf0810179dsh_03

Peace, Love, & Fashion

The peace sign’s 50th anniversary is arriving, and designers are most certainly celebrating.  According to The Cut, Diane Von Furstenberg and Alexander Wang are just two among many designers who will be designing clothing inspired by the peace sign, all of which will be made from sustainable materials.  These designs are commissioned by Earth Pledge, an environmental non-profit organization, and will debut in Barneys on November 16th.  5% of the sales made that day will go towards Earth Pledge.  So get ready to get your Twiggy on, as we revert back to the sixties and remember the days of The Beatles, mod dresses, and hippies who ruled this swingin’ decade.

Payless Gives Back

The best thing about the day after Halloween, besides having pounds of candy to munch on, is that holiday music starts coming on the radio!  And with Christmas music dominating the airwaves, people are starting to think about gift giving.  Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and this year underprivileged children have something to be thankful for.  Payless has decided to engage in the spirit of giving, and have started a charity called Payless Gives.  They will be donating $1 million in shoes to needy children.  What’s even better about this act of goodness is that they don’t want to donate to just one charity.  They are, instead, looking for any local non-profit organizations, which work with underprivileged children, to apply for a portion of the donations.  Check out the link above to learn more, and think about other ways you can give back to the community as well!

Heidi’s Halloween History

Halloween may have been an entire week ago, but I’m still marveling over Heidi Klum’s costume.  Every year, the happy couple, Klum and Seal, throws a huge Halloween bash complete with A-list celebrities and completely outrageous costumes.  Here’s a look at Klum’s costumes the past three years.

How To: Dress For an Interview

Picture this: You have discovered the perfect job for yourself.  You have a brilliant resume, and even have an interview scheduled.  Sounds great, right?  Actually, the hardest part is yet to come.  The only thing more nerve racking than an interview is deciding what to wear to an interview, which is exactly why I am here to help!  Here are a few tips to always keep in mind when dressing to impress, because after all there is no such thing as a second first impression…

MEN

  1.  A 2 piece dark colored suit is ideal, dark blue, black, or gray
  2.  If the interview is for a more casual company, change the suit for a pair of nice khakis, or even plain black pants.
  3.  I suggest a solid white shirt underneath, which helps to keep it simple.
  4.  A necktie should be a solid color or a slight pattern, such as paisley.  Keep the colors simple, and the design low-key.
  5.  A pair of plain black leather shoes is perfect, as long as they match the suit.
  6. Carry a brief case into the interview, so it can hold your resume and anything else you might want to show the company.

WOMEN:

  1. A 2-piece suit is ideal for an interview, too.  You can be more lenient with colors than men, but I recommend keeping it simple as well.
  2. If the interview is for a more casual company, try a plain knee length skirt, or a pair of plain black trousers.
  3. If you go with the second option, make sure your blouse is appropriate.  Something plain that covers up your chest is ideal, but it can have a little more excitement.  It can be colorful, but try not to wear a shirt with a pattern.
  4. Always remember to wear pantyhose so that your bare legs are not showing.
  5. Keep shoes simple.  They should be close-toed, but a peep-toe works well, too.  And remember to make sure you can walk in the heels.  Nothing worse than tripping on your way in!
  6. A brief case is not necessary for women, but a bag big enough to hold everything you need is.  Carry one that is simple and professional, and make sure it is organized so you can pull out what you need efficiently.

Just a few last minute tips for both men and women:

  1. Polish your shoes!  Dirty, scuffed up shoes are noticeable and are seen as unprofessional.
  2. Trim your fingernails!  How you maintain your nails says a lot about your character.  Women, your nails can be painted but make sure it’s a solid color, or a French manicure.
  3. Try on your outfit before the day of the interview.  There is nothing worse than realizing something does not fit anymore, or that there is a run in the only pair of pantyhose you have.  Also, lay out your outfit the night before so you’re not scrambling around in the morning.
  4. Keep jewlery to a minimum. Simple earrings or a wristwatch is just enough.
  5. Don’t let your outfit speak for itself.  Use your mind and those skills you have to land the job you’re after.  A pair of beautiful earrings won’t get you the job, but your confidence and brain will!

Here’s a video to check out for more tips on how to dress for an interview!
